Waterless urinal and garden sink for allotment sheds and garden plots

A wall-mounted waterless urinal for allotment sheds, garden plots, summer houses and cabins at the bottom of the garden. It hangs on the shed wall, needs no water and no drain, and the urine runs down a hose into a canister – or into the liquid container of your separating toilet. It is light plastic, not ceramic, so it goes up without a plumber.

The Pi-Pi outdoor sink goes on the same wall. You fill it from your own watering can or water butt, and the waste water runs through a hose into a bucket – no tank, no pump, no tap.

The problem on a plot without mains drainage

Most allotments and garden plots have no sewer and often no running water in the shed. A bucket in the corner starts to smell quickly, and a chemical toilet means carrying and emptying fluid. A separating toilet (Trelino, BOXIO, Kildwick, Separett, Biolan) deals with most of it, but if two people use the shed, the liquid container becomes the thing you are forever emptying.

Pi-Pi takes on one specific job: it collects urine from men standing up, separately and with no water. Less liquid reaches the toilet, so its container fills more slowly and the contents stay drier.

Setting it up in a typical shed

• Pick the wall: a spot near the toilet or by the door, on a firm wall – brick, concrete, timber or a framed wall – with screws or plugs to suit the wall
• Hang the urinal: fix it to the wall with ordinary fittings; no plumber and no special tools are needed
• Run the hose down: push it onto the stepped outlet Ø24/32/40 mm and take it to the canister below with a steady fall and no sags, so nothing sits in the line
• Add the vent if you have one: with Standard Plus, join the Ø70 mm top port to the toilet’s existing vent pipe or a pipe of your own
• Put the sink alongside: water from a watering can on a shelf or from the water butt, waste water by hose into a bucket

Standard or Standard Plus

• Standard: closed top – the simple choice when the shed has no vent pipe
• Standard Plus: a Ø70 mm port on top for connecting to the vent of your separating toilet or to a vent pipe of its own

Both have the stepped outlet Ø24/32/40 mm, weigh 1.4–1.5 kg and are made in Estonia (EU).

Looking after it through the season

• Keep it clean: rinse the urinal and the hose regularly and empty the canister before it gets full – smell usually starts where liquid is left standing
• Winter: the plastic is frost-resistant down to −40 °C (working range −40…+60 °C), so an unheated shed is fine. At the end of the season take the hose off, empty the canister and leave the urinal on the wall
• Emptying: empty the canister in line with your site’s rules

What to do with collected urine

• Garden fertiliser: some gardeners use diluted urine as a feed; take the rules and dilution ratios from official or professional guidance for your region, and check your plot regulations
• For disposal: empty the canister only where your site’s rules allow – for example a shared collection point, if there is one
