Why a bucket, chemical toilet, and one separation toilet are not enough

There is no sewer system on the garden plot, and connecting to it is generally prohibited by community rules and local legislation (in Germany — § 3 BKleingG, in the UK — Allotments Act, in Poland — ROD statute, in the Netherlands — Volkstuinvereniging rules). A bucket in the corner of the shed starts to smell in a few hours. A chemical toilet is heavy, requires the purchase of scented liquid, its regular emptying, and is unpleasant to maintain. A separation toilet (Trelino, BOXIO, Kildwick, Separett, Biolan) solves most of the problem, but with two users, the liquid waste canister fills up in 2–3 days — it needs to be emptied too often.

Pi-Pi solves one specific part of this task: separate collection of urine by men standing, against the wall, without water. Your separation toilet's canister fills 2–3 times slower, and the main toilet works only for feces.

Complies with garden community rules

Waterless separation toilets (Trockentrenntoiletten, composting toilets) are allowed in Schrebergartenverein, on British allotments, in Dutch Volkstuinen, and Polish ROD — this is an established practice. Pi-Pi operates without plumbing and without sewer connection — urine flows by gravity into a canister or the storage tank of an already installed separation toilet. Check your community's statute: the restriction usually concerns stationary sewage systems, not dry systems.

What to do with collected urine

• In compost: 6 parts urine to 1 part peat accelerates decomposition and retains nitrogen in the pile
• For disposal: canister is emptied into the community's common receiver or disposed of according to plot rules

Frequently asked questions

Will the urinal freeze in winter in an unheated shed?

The urinal itself — no: LLDPE remains elastic down to −40 °C. In winter, the hose is removed from the nozzle and the canister is emptied; an empty Pi-Pi winters calmly on the wall.

Is it compatible with Trelino, BOXIO, Kildwick, Separett, Biolan separation toilets?

Yes. Standard Plus has a top inlet Ø70 mm for connection to the standard ventilation of the separation toilet, lower drainage Ø24/32/40 mm goes into the liquid waste canister. Installation without adapters.

Can collected urine be used as fertilizer?

Yes. Dilution 1:10 with water is a common gardening practice for tomatoes, cucumbers, and pumpkins in a greenhouse or garden bed.

Does the waterless urinal smell in the shed?

No. Ammonia smell occurs when urine comes into contact with feces; this does not happen in a separation urinal. The canister is rinsed with water every 1–2 weeks.

Dry waterless systems are a permitted practice in Schrebergartenverein (DE), on allotments (UK), in Volkstuinen (NL), on ROD (PL), and in most Russian garden communities.
