Pi-Pi Urinal — Questions and Answers

Installation, delivery, care, warranty and using it alongside your composting toilet — everything worth knowing about the waterless Pi-Pi urinal for the garden shed, allotment and off-grid cabin with no plumbing.

Products and Technologies

We make the Pi-Pi urinal from LLDPE (linear low-density polyethylene) because it stays tough and flexible even in the cold — ideal for an unheated garden shed or cabin.

What LLDPE means for you:

  • Frost-safe: stays flexible down to −40 °C and won't crack, whereas HDPE turns brittle in the cold
  • Impact-resistant: shrugs off knocks during transport and fitting without breaking
  • Robust: copes better with rough handling and cleaning products

HDPE is a little more chemical- and UV-resistant, but for year-round outdoor use in the garden the flexibility and frost-resistance of LLDPE matter more — you want the urinal to come through the winter in one piece.

LLDPE and PP (polypropylene) are made for different conditions. PP is stiffer and more heat-resistant — but for the Pi-Pi urinal in the garden, LLDPE is the better choice, especially through the colder months.

Why LLDPE wins for you:

  • Frost-safe: LLDPE stays flexible down to −40 °C, while PP turns brittle in even light frost and can crack
  • Impact-resistant: LLDPE gives and springs back, PP can crack on a knock
  • Worry-free: no risk of finding the urinal cracked in the shed after a cold winter

PP pays off mainly where things are sterilised at high temperatures or kept permanently warm and indoors. For year-round use in the garden, LLDPE comes out on top.

The Pi-Pi urinal is made by rotational moulding — which brings real, everyday benefits:

  • Moulded in one piece: seamless, with no glued joints — no weak spots and no crevices for bacteria to gather
  • Even wall thickness: 4–5 mm all round, including corners and edges
  • Holds its shape: won't warp, even after years of use
  • Impact-resistant: the continuous material structure copes well with knocks and drops

There are two versions of the Pi-Pi urinal — the only difference is the top connection:

  • Standard: closed top, completely waterless — the right choice for most garden sheds and cabins.
  • Standard Plus: with a top inlet Ø70 mm. You can connect a vent pipe to it, or link it to the ventilation hose of your separating toilet — so the air inside stays fresh.

Go for Standard Plus if you want to run a vent to the outside; otherwise the Standard model is all you need.

The Pi-Pi urinal has a stepped outlet spigot (Ø24 / 32 / 40 mm). You simply cut it to the step you need and connect it however suits you: to a canister, a holding container, or straight to the liquid tank of your separating toilet. Common hose and pipe sizes fit without any special adapters.

Made from industrial LLDPE, the Pi-Pi urinal is rated on its datasheet for −40 °C to +60 °C. In the garden that means year-round outdoor use in any European climate — an unheated shed in winter is no problem. For everyday frost-resistance we work to a conservative −40 °C.

The Pi-Pi urinal is made from LLDPE, which is very resistant to chemicals and gets on fine with almost any household or garden cleaner you already keep in the shed.

Perfectly fine:

  • ordinary all-purpose and bathroom cleaners
  • diluted acids (citric acid, vinegar, vinegar cleaner)
  • diluted alkalis (mild soap solution, ammonia)
  • alcohols (isopropanol 70%, ethanol)
  • biodegradable cleaners — ideal if you reuse the urine as fertiliser

Use sparingly and rinse well:

  • concentrated bleach
  • solvents such as acetone (rinse off straight away)

Don't use:

  • concentrated acids (sulfuric acid, strong HCl)
  • aggressive solvents (petrol, kerosene, paint thinner)

Tip: a simple household cleaner is all you need. If you reuse the urine in the garden as fertiliser, a biodegradable product is the best choice.

You can install the Pi-Pi urinal yourself in 5–7 minutes — no plumber or special tools needed. An illustrated step-by-step guide (PDF) is included with every delivery and available on the product page.

It's simple:

  • Attach to the wall: the mounting kit is included and tailored to the wall type — whether it's a garden shed, site cabin, or toilet cubicle
  • Connect the drain: trim the stepped nozzle Ø24/32/40 mm to the desired step and direct the hose to a canister, collection tank, or the liquid tank of a composting toilet
  • Eliminate odors: the waterless trap keeps the air fresh
  • No water needed: the urinal is completely waterless, no plumbing connection required

Next to a composting toilet: place the Pi-Pi right next to a composting or dry toilet. This way, urine goes into its own canister, the main toilet container fills 2–3 times slower, stays drier, and smells less.

The full installation guide (PDF) is available on each product page.

Pi-Pi and Agande are both European makers of waterless urinals — the main differences come down to the material and how well they last outdoors.

  • Material: Pi-Pi — LLDPE, frost-safe down to −40 °C and springy under impact. Agande — polypropylene (PP), which cracks more easily in the cold.
  • Service life: the LLDPE Pi-Pi lasts 7–10 years even outdoors. PP averages 3–5 years.
  • Connection: Pi-Pi has a stepped spigot Ø24/32/40 mm, so it fits any canister, hose or separating-toilet tank with no adapter.
  • Odour: Pi-Pi Standard Plus offers a Ø70 mm port for venting, which keeps the air in the shed fresh.

The full comparison is on the Pi-Pi vs Agande page.

No — in normal use there's no smell, and that's the big difference from a bucket. The urine drains straight into a sealed container, so no standing liquid is left in the urinal to go stale. It's that stale, standing liquid that causes the smell, and here there simply isn't any.

The Standard Plus model has a Ø70 mm vent port on top: connect a vent pipe to it and any residual odour is carried outside. That's enough to use it happily even inside a garden shed or cabin. Just rinse the bowl occasionally and you're done.

It runs on gravity alone — no water, no electricity, no plumbing. The urinal screws to the wall and the urine simply drains down through the stepped outlet into a canister, or straight into the liquid tank of your separating toilet.

There's nothing to flush, no pump and no pipework to lay. When the container is full you lift it out and empty it — that's the whole of the maintenance. Have a look at the models in the urinal catalogue.

The urinal can be mounted on any wall at a height convenient for you — it's lightweight (~1.4 kg), so it holds even on a thin wall of a garden shed or site cabin. No wet work required.

A hose runs down from the nozzle — into a canister or directly into the liquid tank of a composting/separation toilet. It also works in unheated structures: the material is frost-resistant down to −40 °C, so wintering at the cottage is not a problem.

Applications and Planning

Yes — this is exactly what the Pi-Pi urinal is made for. It works with no water and no drain connection, so it fits perfectly into a garden shed, allotment plot, weekend cabin or off-grid hut with no mains plumbing.

How it works:

  • completely waterless — nothing to flush, nothing to connect
  • the stepped outlet Ø24/32/40 mm runs into a canister or holding container
  • urine is collected separately and can be diluted (about 1:10) and used as garden fertiliser, or simply emptied

What about the rules? Across Europe the principle is the same: liquid must not just soak away into the ground. Because the Pi-Pi urinal collects urine in a closed container, you stay on the right side of the rules — in the UK (allotment tenancy terms), as well as places like Germany (Kleingarten), the Netherlands (volkstuin) or Austria.

The Pi-Pi urinal works best alongside your composting or separating toilet (Trelino, BOXIO, Kildwick): the urine goes straight into its own canister, so the toilet's solids container fills up far more slowly and stays drier and less smelly.

Because urine is what creates most of the volume — and most of the smell — in a composting toilet. Divert it into the urinal instead and the solids container stays drier, fills up 2–3× more slowly and smells far less. The whole setup becomes much more pleasant to live with.

That's the idea of "alongside, not instead of": the urinal doesn't replace your composting or separating toilet — it works with it and takes the hardest load off it. You'll find the models in the catalogue.

Yes — and that's exactly what it's designed for. The Pi-Pi urinal screws to the wall alongside your composting toilet, not instead of it. It catches the urine separately and so takes the load off the toilet's container. Pi-Pi doesn't replace Trelino, BOXIO or Kildwick — it works with them.

  • Trelino Origin / Evo: run the stepped outlet Ø24/32/40 mm straight into the liquid canister or a second container. The top inlet Ø70 mm on the Standard Plus model connects to Trelino's vent pipe.
  • BOXIO Toilet: the 5-litre BOXIO canister fills up fast with two men. With Pi-Pi the men pee standing into the urinal — so the main canister fills 2–3× more slowly and stays less smelly.
  • Kildwick EasyLoo / MiniLoo: likewise — Pi-Pi runs into the liquid outlet or a separate tank.

Pick the model for your setup in the catalogue: Standard drains into a canister, while Standard Plus also connects to your dry toilet's vent via the Ø70 mm top inlet.

It's not just for men, though it's designed mainly for standing use — so for men and boys. And that's exactly where the benefit for the whole household lies: divert the men's and boys' urine into the urinal and the load on the shared composting or separating toilet drops dramatically, so it fills up less often and smells less.

For women who'd like to use it standing, portable funnel adapters are available and work perfectly well with this kind of urinal.

We respond without overclaiming. Pi-Pi does not have formal CE marking — and it shouldn't: a wall-mounted waterless urinal is not among the products for which CE marking is mandatory under EU directives. It does not fall under the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC (no drives or moving parts), nor under the Construction Products Regulation 305/2011 (CPR/BauPVO) — it is not a load-bearing construction element, nor is it electrical equipment or personal protective equipment.

What we provide:

  • LLDPE technical data sheet: density 0.935–0.940 g/cm³, MFI 4–8 g/10 min (190 °C / 2.16 kg)
  • confirmation of REACH registration of the granulate supplier (Regulation EC 1907/2006, with no substances from the SVHC list above 0.1% by mass)
  • RoHS declaration according to Directive 2011/65/EU: material does not contain restricted heavy metals and halogenated flame retardants; no PFAS additives are used
  • manufacturer's declaration of conformity for tender documentation

The full package is sent via the contact form upon request with the purchasing organization's details.

Production and Customisation

For your own garden, the Pi-Pi urinal comes in two stock colours that are ready to ship:

  • Black (with UV-stabilising carbon black) — the best choice for outdoor use
  • Grey

Custom colours are available on bulk orders (typically 100+ units): any RAL, Pantone or colour sample can be matched using pigment masterbatches mixed with virgin LLDPE during rotational moulding.

Lead times:

  • Standard colours: 2–5 business days (from stock)
  • Custom colours: 4–6 weeks (including colour matching, sample approval, production)

A note on colour durability outdoors:

  • Dark colours (black, dark grey, navy, brown): excellent UV stability — best for outdoor use
  • Mid colours (green, blue, red): good stability with UV stabilisers
  • Light colours (white, pastels): not recommended outdoors — show dirt and fade within 2–3 years

Maintenance and Care

The Pi-Pi urinal is hardly any work. The smooth plastic surface wipes clean in seconds — with no plumbed-in flush water.

As needed (depending on use):

  1. rinse with a little water from a watering can or spray bottle
  2. apply an ordinary bathroom or all-purpose cleaner
  3. wipe with a soft cloth or sponge
  4. give it a quick rinse — done

Every now and then, a deeper clean:

  1. clear any deposits from the outlet
  2. use a vinegar or citric-acid cleaner against limescale and odour
  3. clean all surfaces including the outlet area and rinse

Good to know:

  • use soft sponges rather than steel wool or scouring powder
  • check the outlet runs freely from time to time
  • if you reuse the urine as garden fertiliser, clean with biodegradable products

In normal garden use the Pi-Pi urinal lasts many years with no parts to replace.

Yes, with no worries. The Pi-Pi urinal is frost-safe down to −40 °C and can stay in an unheated shed or outdoors all year round — you don't need to take it down or store it away for winter.

Tips for the cold season:

  • Drain any standing water: empty the trap and outlet so nothing can freeze in them
  • Easy to handle: if you do want to put it away — at ~1.4 kg it lifts off in seconds
  • Cover optional: the material is UV-resistant; a tarp only keeps the dirt off
  • No heating needed: with no water sitting in the urinal, there's no risk of frost damage

So your shed or cabin is ready to use again the moment winter is over.

Minor marks (scratches, scuffs):

Surface scratches can be smoothed out with fine sandpaper (grit 400–600). This doesn't affect how the urinal works.

Cracks or splits:

Because the Pi-Pi urinal is made from LLDPE, it can be repaired by plastic welding (hot air + LLDPE welding rod) — a local plastic-repair workshop can do this for you.

When a repair is no longer worth it:

  • cracks right at the mounting points or in high-stress areas
  • large-area damage (a crack longer than 10 cm) — a replacement makes more sense
  • several cracks, a sign of material fatigue

Prevention: thanks to the flexible material, the Pi-Pi urinal survives most knocks without cracking. The most common causes of damage are:

  • unsuitable, overly aggressive cleaning products
  • UV breakdown after many years outdoors
  • heavy knocks during transport or storage

Our warranty covers manufacturing defects — but not damage from improper use or unsuitable chemicals.

It depends on the size of your container and how often you're there. For a single household user a 5–10 litre canister typically lasts about a week. When it's full you just lift it out, empty it — diluted, onto the garden, or down a drain — and give it a quick rinse. No mess.

The real bonus: because the urine no longer goes into your composting toilet, you empty that far less often — and that's the job nobody enjoys.

Warranty and Support

Every Pi-Pi urinal comes with a 12-month manufacturer's warranty on material and manufacturing defects. As a private buyer you also have your statutory consumer rights on top of that. See the full warranty terms.

The 12-month warranty covers material and manufacturing defects. It does not cover:

  • Improper use: mechanical damage, damage from aggressive cleaning products, deliberate damage
  • Incorrect fitting: damage from wrong mounting or a wrong outlet connection
  • Normal wear: scratches, fading after many years of UV exposure
  • Third-party accessories: e.g. waterless-trap cartridges or sealing fluids (covered by their own makers' warranty)
  • Consumables: cleaning products, screws and fixings

To make a warranty claim, let us know within 30 days of noticing the defect and include photos and proof of purchase.

See the full warranty terms.

No problem — just report any transport damage within 24 hours and send us a few photos. We'll sort it out with the carrier and arrange a replacement.

More on this in our claims process.

Environmental and Sustainability

Yes, the Pi-Pi urinal is fully recyclable. It's made from 100% of a single plastic (polyethylene) with no mixed materials — which makes it ideal for recycling.

Marking: LLDPE carries the recycling code RIC #4 and is accepted by most recycling centres.

How recycling works:

  1. collection and cleaning of the used urinal
  2. shredding into flakes
  3. melting and pelletising
  4. making new plastic products

High recovery rate: up to 95% of the material can be reclaimed. Because the Pi-Pi urinal is moulded in one piece (no glue, coatings or inserts), recycling is especially straightforward.

At the end of its long life you simply take the urinal to your local recycling centre to return it to the plastics loop.

The Pi-Pi urinal is built to last and to leave a small footprint — good for your garden and good for the planet.

Over its lifetime:

  • Long service life: 7–10 years in normal use — that spreads the impact of making it over many years
  • Lightweight: ~1.4 kg instead of the 15–25 kg of ceramic — noticeably less transport emissions
  • Recyclable: up to 95% of the material can be reclaimed at the end of its life
  • No water at all: no drinking water wasted on flushing, no plumbing needed

On top of that:

  • Made in the EU: manufactured entirely in Estonia — short distances across Europe
  • Single material: 100% LLDPE with no mixed materials, which makes recycling easier

If you dilute the separately collected urine and use it as fertiliser in the garden, you also close a small nutrient loop.

Yes. Diluted with water at roughly 1:10, urine is a good nitrogen fertiliser for non-edible plants, the lawn, ornamental beds and the compost heap. It's a long-standing gardeners' tip, and collecting the liquid separately makes it easy to put to use.

A few sensible rules: don't pour it on neat, don't overapply, and keep it off anything you're going to eat. And do check your local allotment or garden rules — some sites have their own guidance on this.
